Restored Kiyotsu Gorge “Tunnel of Light” blends nature and art
Where nature meets art, the recently restored Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel stretches along the heart of Japan’s snow city, Echigo-Tsumari. Calling on the five main elements of nature, the Beijing-based architecture studio MAD transformed the tunnel space into an oasis for those who seek to immerse themselves in nature. Aside from refurbishing the tunnel to its former glory, a wooden “Periscope” (element of wood) has been built to include a café and an inviting hot spring spa. Notably, the Light Cave (element of water), a previously dull and uninviting space, is now renewed with stainless steel walls and a shallow pool of water that together invite the reflections of the breathtaking terrain. The transformation of a dated tunnel to a space where nature, art, and community collide appeals to tourists and locals alike. Much like the way the art installations take the viewers through a journey of nature and reflection, Riviera is keen to create events that guide the audience through a journey of discovery and awe.
