Entering China as a Foreigner to Attend an Event

If you plan to enter China for events from abroad to attend an event, several requirements may apply depending on your passport type and visa status. Below is a clear summary of the current regulations.

Enter China for Events: Visa Entry Guidelines

Diplomatic / Service / Courtesy / C Visa Holders
You should follow the entry policies that were in place before the Phase I travel ban on March 28, 2020.

Other Visa Holders (with China-made COVID-19 vaccine):

• Two doses (correctly spaced) or single-dose taken at least 14 days before applying.

• For Business Activities: You and your family may apply using pre-pandemic application documents (invitation letter no longer required).

• Emergency Humanitarian Needs: Foreign family members of Chinese citizens or permanent residents may apply for the appropriate visa.

Valid APEC Business Travel Card Holders
You may apply for an M visa by presenting your valid APEC business travel card and an invitation letter from your inviting party in mainland China.

Enter China for Events: Additional Requirements Under Phase III Travel Ban

For applicants from certain countries, additional restrictions still apply. In these cases, a special visa and invitation letter from relevant Chinese authorities are required for emergencies:

United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Ukraine, Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, South Africa.

Residence Permit Scenarios

• Valid Residence Permit Holders (work, personal affairs, reunion): Entry permitted with the valid permit.

• Expired Residence Permit (after March 28, 2020): Apply for a new visa using the expired permit; invitation letter not required.

• No Residence Permit: Apply for a special visa with an invitation letter, provided your purpose is for economic, trade, scientific, technological, or humanitarian reasons.
